Our Pastor's Wife
Carolyn Jean Orr Davis is a native of Southaven, Mississippi. Her parents, Willie and Lorene Orr, did not enjoy the full benefits of a formal education, but they exemplified character, religious beliefs, and dedicated work habits in which they instilled in their children. Mrs. Davis was introduced to the piano when she was ten years old.
She learned very quickly and she practiced a lot. She began her first job as a church pianist when she was eleven years old. That job was the beginning of her career in music and served as a most valuable pillar in her life. Upon graduation from Southaven High School (Southaven, Mississippi) in 1978, Mrs. Davis pursued a career in music at Jackson State University. In 1982, she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music in Education (B.M.E.) Degree. In 1984, she received her certification as a teacher in “Talented and Gifted Music” from Delta State University. She taught in the Mississippi Schools from 1982-1985. She became known by her assessor as one “Born to Teach!” As a teacher, Mrs. Davis has always had the ability to make learning fun and transfer knowledge and understanding to her students.
In 1985, Mrs. Davis was employed by the Houston Independent School District where she served as the music teacher of J.N. Dodson Elementary & Montessori School for 29 years (until the closing of the school). She taught her students to read music and play instruments including: precorder, recorder, keyboard, xylophone, African drums, handbells, etc. She has had the great honor of taking two groups of students to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas (TMEA). She was awarded Teacher of the Year from Dodson Elementary & Montessori School in 1992, 1995, 2002 & 2004. In 2004, she also won Elementary Teacher of the Year 1st Runner-Up for the Houston Independent School District.
Presently, Mrs. Davis is the music teacher at Field Elementary School, Houston ISD. Her goals for her students did not change when she changed schools. She has started another group of music lovers in the Heights where she is teaching them to read music and play instruments. After school, Mrs. Davis offers private piano lessons through OrrDAVIS Academy and she teaches the Orff Music Approach to students in Turning Hearts Music Ensemble. Making the difference that influences the course of children lives is the basis of her teaching. She truly thanks God for allowing her to touch the lives of every single boy and girl who comes across her path. Mrs. Davis is a member of the New Beginning Church where her pastor and husband is Matthew A. Davis. They have been married for 18 years. In the church, she serves as Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher, Program Publisher, and Historian. She and her husband believe God brought them together for one reason...to share the Gospel with others. Her life’s philosophy is echoed in the words of this song: “If I can help somebody as I pass along; If I can cheer somebody with a word or song; If I can show somebody he’s traveling wrong; Then my living shall not be in vain!”
II Chronicles 16:9; Acts 1:8; Malachi 4:6
